Know the Angelic Realm : In view of Islamic Doctrine

By Unknown - February 16, 2018

According to the language, the word "angel" is a plural word derived from Arab malak (ملك) which means strength, derived from the word mashdar "al-alukah" meaning mission, then the bearer of the mission is usually called the ar-apostle.

In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

1  Praise be to Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Maker of the angels messengers with wings—double, triple, and quadruple. He adds to creation as He wills. Allah is Able to do all things.
QS. Al Fatir (35) : 1

Angels created by Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى are made of light (nur), based on one of Muhammad's S.A.W hadiths, "Angels have been created from light."

The nearest translation: "The Messenger S.A.W  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:" The angels are created from light, the jinn are created from the burning fire, and Adam is created from what you sifati (the land) "

(Narated By Imam Muslim)

Faith to angels is part of the Pillars of Faith. Faith to angels means to believe in angels, even though we can not see them, and that they are one of God's creatures. God created them from light. They worship God and always obey Him, they never sin. No one knows the exact number of angels, only God knows the numbers.

Although humans can not see the angels but if God wills then the angels can be seen by humans, which usually happens to the prophets and apostles. Angels always appear in the form of men to the prophets and apostles. As happened to the Prophet Ibrahim as.

164  "There is not one of us but has an assigned position.
QS. As-Saffat (37) : 164

Beings of Angels

In addition to those already mentioned in a verse of the Qur'an above, in some hadith it is said that Jibril has 600 wings, Israfil has 1200 wings, in which one wings equal the 600 wings of Jibril and the last is said that Hamalat al-'Arsy has 2400 wings in which one wing equals 1200 Israfil wings.

The form of an angel is impossible to see with the naked eye, since the human eye is created from the basic elements of dry clay from the black mud given the shape will not be able to see the form of angel originating from light, only Prophet Muhammad  S.A.W is able to see the original form angels even up to two times.

They do not grow old or get younger, their circumstances are exactly the same as they were created. In the teachings of Islam, the worship of humans and jinns is preferred by God over the worship of angels, because humans and jinn can make their own choices differently from angels who have no other choice. Angels assume certain tasks in managing the universe. They can cross the universe at lightning speed or even faster. They are not male or female and not married.

The Nature of Angels
The properties of angels that are believed by Muslims are as follows:
  • Always glorify day and night never stops.

20  They praise night and day, without ever tiring.

QS. Al Anbiya (21) : 20

  • Saints of human nature and jinn, such as lust, hunger, illness, eating, sleeping, joking, arguing, and others.

50  They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.
QS. An-Nahl (16) : 50

26  And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken to himself a son." Be He glorified; they are but honored servants.

27  They never speak before He has spoken, and they only act on His command.

28  He knows what is before them, and what is behind them; and they do not intercede except for him whom He approves; and they tremble in awe of Him.

QS. Al Anbiya (21) : 26-28

  • Never being immoral and always practicing whatever Allah
6  O you who believe! Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire, whose fuel is people and stones. Over it are angels, fierce and powerful. They never disobey Allah in anything He commands them, and they carry out whatever they are commanded.
QS. At-Tahrim (66) : 6
  • Has shame.
The Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said "How I am not ashamed of a man whose angels are ashamed of him".
(Hadith Narated by Imam Muslim)
  • Can be disturbed by unpleasant smells, dogs and sculptures.
Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said: "Whoever eats garlic, shallots, and onions do not approach our mosque, because angels feel sick (disturbed) with things that make people feel sick".
(Hadith Narated by Imam Muslim)
  • Not eating and drinking.
27  He set it before them. He said, "Will you not eat?"

28  And he harbored fear of them. They said, "Do not fear," and they announced to him the good news of a knowledgeable boy.
QS. Adh-Dhariyat (51) : 27-28
  • Able to change his form.
16  And mention in the Scripture Mary, when she withdrew from her people to an eastern location.

17  She screened herself away from them, and We sent to her Our spirit, and He appeared to her as an immaculate human.
QS. Maryam (19) : 16-17
  • It has the power and the speed of light.
82  And when Our command came about, We turned it upside down, and We rained down on it stones of baked clay.
QS. Hud (11) : 82

17  And the angels will be ranged around its borders, while eight will be carrying the Throne of your Lord above them that Day.
QS. Al Haqqah (69) : 17

3  From Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent.

4  Unto Him the angels and the Spirit ascend on a Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years.
QS. Al Ma'arij (70) : 3-4

The instructions in the verse are very clear that the comparison of the angel's flight speed is in a daily measure of 50,000 years.
Based on the method of calculation by DR. Mansour Hassab El Naby as in his writing that for a day that is 1,000 years old equal to the speed of light (299,792.4989 km / sec).Based on the formulas and the same way for a day comparison equal to 50,000 years can be obtained the calculation is equal to 50 times the speed of light (14.989.624,9442 km / sec). The conclusion is based on information from the Qur'an can be calculated the speed of flying angels and Gabriel is 50 times the speed of light.
In the video below we will visualize how exactly the speed of light that occurs:

At the speed of light, what would you see?

The Name and Duties of the Angels
Among the angels that every Muslim must know as one of the Pillars of Faith, based on the Qur'an, hadith and the books. The names (calls) and their assignments are as follows:

  • Gabriel - The leader of angels, in charge of conveying revelations and teaching them to prophets and apostles.
  • Mikail - The providers of the sustenance of all beings, he has the servants who organize the plants, the rain, the wind, the course of the sun, the moon, and the star causing the rotation of day and night.
  • Israfil - The trumpet on the Day of Judgment and the Day of Resurrection (yaumul ba'ats).
  • Munkar and Nakir - Examiners of human charity in nature barzakh.
  • Izrail - The lifting of all beings, divided into 2 types namely:
  1. The violent lifeblowers,
  2. The life-console of a good being gently.

  • Ridwan - The gatekeeper of heaven. Serve the experts of heaven.
  • Malik - The leader of the Zabaniah angels and the gatekeepers of hell.
  • Zabaniah - 19 angel torturers in hell are cruel and rude.
  • Harut and Marut - Two Angels who descend in the land of Babylon.

Angels never tire of doing what they are told. As supernatural beings, the angelic form can not be seen, heard, touched, smelled and felt by human beings, in other words can not be reached by the five senses, unless the angel appears in a certain form, like the likeness of man. There are exceptions to the story of Muhammad who had met with Gabriel by showing his original form, the appearance shown to Muhammad this twice, that is when receiving revelation and Isra and Mi'raj.

Some prophets and apostles have been shown to manifest angels that turn into human beings, as in the story of Abraham, Lut, Maryam, Muhammad and others.

"In contrast to Christianity and Judaism, Islam does not recognize the term "Fallen Angel". Azazil who later earned the epithet of Satan, was the ancestor of Jin, like Adam's ancestor Man. The djinn are creatures created by God from 'smokeless fire', while angels are created from light."
