Humans Migrated Across the Globe
The skulls of early female humans are found in the Manot Cave, Western Galilee, Israel, and are believed to be a hint of human migration out of Africa that later inhabited the European region.From the Time site report, the skull findings believed to be about 55,000 years ago are claimed by archaeologists as the first example recorded as modern humans in the Levant region during that time.
For the record, Levant is a geographical term that refers to the vast area of south-western south-Asia from the Taurus Mountains, bordered by the Mediterranean sea west and east, the northern Arabian Desert, and Mesopotamia.
In Nature junal, the researchers also say that this ancient man may be the first to pass through the region on its way to a cooler region.
"This is the first specimen to connect Africa to Europe," said Israel Hershkovitz, a researcher at Tel Aviv University.
Remnants of the previous Neanderthal species have been found near the Manot Cave as well, aged around 50,000 and 65,000 years ago. It indicates that there are two species in the same place at the same time.
Neanderthals themselves are an extinct human species in the genus Homo. They are closely related to modern humans but are believed to have different DNA.
Still from Time reports, non-Africans in fact have little Neanderthal DNA and a number of studies have shown that the mixture occurred about 50,000 to 60,000 years ago. [more...]
